Modern Transportation - Uber Style
This week, we had the chance to have a virtual interview with the new country manager for Uber Ghana, Marjorie Saint-Lot.
Economically, Ghana is not doing so great. Inflation has skyrocketed to 23%, the local government has introduced new taxes including a controversial E-Levy which taxes the transfers of mobile money. All of this contributes to increasing fuel prices for drivers.
Uber, as well as other ride-sharing companies in Ghana, are having to adapt. Uber, which had been unwilling to reduce the 25% commission it took from drivers, finally budged and brought it down to 20%. Not only that, it also increased its base price from 5 GHC to 7 GHC. It actually wouldn’t be surprising to see more upward tick in Uber prices given the economic circumstances.
For now, Uber Ghana is focusing on its upcoming 6th anniversary in Ghana. Next week, Uber will be having its global event where the company will share updates on what the future looks like for the transportation company.
The question is, will they be any surprises for Ghana? Uber denied that they were expanding its Uber Eats service to Ghana but we have a feeling a launch is actually in the works. We’ll just wait and see what next week brings.
